Podría ser varias cosas a la vez: una membrana sensorial, un filtro emocional, un espacio de traducción. Ver una pintura implica traducir. Tratamos de traducir en palabras lo que vemos. Anoche leía una frase de Virginia Woolf en la National Portrait Gallery: dice que no entiende cómo la gente puede pensar la pintura como un medio silencioso, porque cuando te quedas mirándola empiezan a aparecer palabras.
Si eso es así, entonces la pintura se vuelve un espacio de diálogo. En el caso del Museo Jumex, la instalación genera una experiencia inmersiva: te invita a sentarte en el piso, sobre la alfombra, y literalmente entrar en la pintura. Pertenece al campo de la pintura expandida, pero se expande a través de la escucha y del habla, que se vuelven materiales en sí mismos. No creo que la pintura sea un medio cerrado. En realidad, la pregunta es más amplia: ¿qué hace que una obra esté abierta? […]”

“You often say that painting can function as an interface. How would you define that interface in your work?
It could be several things at once: a sensory membrane, an emotional filter, a space of translation. To look at a painting is to translate. We try to translate what we see into words. Last night I was reading a quote by Virginia Woolf at the National Portrait Gallery: she says she does not understand how people can think of painting as a silent medium, because when you stand and look at it, words begin to appear.
If that is the case, then painting becomes a space for dialogue. In the context of the Museo Jumex, the installation generates an immersive experience: it invites you to sit on the floor, on the carpet, and literally enter the painting. It belongs to the field of expanded painting, but it expands through listening and speaking, which themselves become materials. I don’t think painting is a closed medium.
