Don't ever work!

11.05.2021 - 01.15.2022

Pequod Co. presents Don´t ever work! by Benjamín Torres, from November 5th, 2021 at Lancaster 29.

For this exhibition, Torres produced a large-format, three-dimensional piece that takes urban graffiti, photographed around his immediate surroundings in Mexico City, as a starting point. By becoming sculptural, this body of work speaks about the relationship between form, space and text and articulates the famous and incendiary situationist scribble that the show owes its name to.

Likewise, he generated a group of carved concrete reliefs that address graffiti from a historical conception inspired by "Graffiti”, a series of photos produced by Brassaï between the 30s and 50s in the City of Paris, before the commercialization of spray paint.

About the artist:

Benjamín Torres (Mexico City, 1969) was educated in the sculpture field and later led his work towards experimentation, within a more open and post-conceptual concept of tridimensional practice.

Benjamín encounters his benchmarks in the stockpile, the dismantling and the analysis of certain devices of the consumer culture and of media information. The methods used for the artist production stem from the post avant-garde scenario: appropriation, intervention, recontextualization and assemblage, which he uses for resignifying cultural phenomena as well as global and immediate surroundings.

During his career, Torres has participated in more than 80 group shows and 17 solo shows, in Mexico and abroad, among his more recent shows are: his solo show Don't ever work! at Pequod Co. (Mexico City, 2021); Approaching Abstraction at Blain/Southern gallery (group show, London, 2019), and the solo show Dislocaciones demarcadas at Estudio Marte (Mexico City, 2019).

His work can be found in Colección Jumex, ESPAC, Fundación M, Fundación RAC, MACO Oaxaca and Phillips/Yuyito, among others.
