His interdisciplinary practice, spanning installation, sculpture, painting, photography and video, has been shown in solo and group exhibitions in Mexico, USA, Europe and Asia, in spaces that include Museo de Arte Moderno, Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros, Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil, La Panadería and Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporáneo in Mexico City, along with El Museo del Barrio, Anthology Film Archives, White Box and apexart (New York, NY), LA><ART, MoLAA (Los Angeles, CA) Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia (Madrid, Spain), National Center for Contemporary Art (Moscow, Russia), The Modern (Fort Worth, TX), MCA Denver (Denver, CO) and the National Gallery of Victoria (Melbourne, Australia).
Joaquin Segura’s artistic output is centered on meditations on the phenomenology of history, power, and truth, engaging with notions such as sociopolitical microclimates, asymmetrical narratives, and ideology. His recent works address the ontological meaning of political extremism, language, and radical thought, with a special emphasis on its materialities. Active since the early 2000s, Segura is widely recognized as one of the leading Mexican artists of his generation.
His work belongs to numerous private and institutional collections including the Walker Art Center, KADIST, The National Gallery of Victoria and Museo de Arte Moderno de México and has been widely reviewed & featured in local and international art publications & major outlets such as Artforum, Flash Art, Adbusters, Art Papers, Código, Art Nexus, Discipline, Celeste, El País & PBS NewsHour, among others.
In 2008/09, Segura was an artist-in-residence at the International Studio & Curatorial Program (New York, NY) and at the 18th Street Arts Center (Santa Monica, CA). Between 2012 and 2023, he undertook artistic residencies and research stays at Hangar –Centre de Producció i Recerca d‘Arts Visuals (Barcelona, Spain), MeetFactory – International Center of Contemporary Art (Prague, Czech Republic), Impakt Foundation (Utrecht, Netherlands), Casa Wabi (Oaxaca, Mexico), Seoul Art Space_Geumcheon (Seoul, South Korea), Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts (Omaha, NE), URRA (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Fountainhead (Miami, FL). In 2018, he’s appointed as a fellow to the National System of Artistic Creators /SACPC (Mexico).
Segura is a founding member and board advisor of SOMA, Mexico City, and currently serves at the Board of Directors at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, Omaha, NE.
